How Pokemon Go is the next step for augmented reality

Pokemon Go has been taking the world by storm. It’s incredibly popular among young adults, and all around a great experience! Even some of the guys in our office have been taking local gyms and becoming pokemon masters. The success of Pokemon Go actually added $7.5 billion to Nintendo’s market value, and increases their stock by about 24.52%!

“Virtual reality is a medium, a means by which humans can share ideas and experiences.”

What's Augmented Reality Again?

Probably the best thing about the app is the augmented reality. But what is augmented reality? According to digitaltrends.com, In 1990, Tom Caudell first coined the term “ augmented reality ” to describe a digital display used by aircraft electricians that blended virtual graphics onto a physical reality. Simply put, it’s adding a virtual layer to our environment. This would be seeing a pokemon in your house or on the street.

This isn't quite the first augmented reality phenomena that’s been popularized. Snapchat provides some crazy filters to layer into our physical reality, but what makes Pokemon so different? It could be the general popularity. It could be loyalty to the brand. Either way, Pokemon Go is arguably the most popular augmented reality app to date.

It’s really great seeing Caterpies in your yard and Zubats flying around; I mean, this is my childhood (and adult) dream come true. Seeing the first step of augmented reality gaming and how captivating it is makes me really excited about what's to come. It’s absolutely possible that we can get to a point where we won’t even need our phones for AR. I imagine virtual/augmented reality goggles will be the next step.

I went on my evening jog the other day and saw groups of people, all ages, traveling together and playing. I think the social effects that this app will result in are phenomenal.

Walking in a natural environment will decrease activity in the subgenual prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain associated with a key factor in depression . This means that if Pokemon Go motivates people enough to go for a walk or hike, there could be a tremendous impact on mental health. Just another reason augmented reality could be a life changer down the line.
